This collection says that I'm a new mum wanting to my baby to learn about the world in terms of texture, shape, imagery, space and play. The plants create an enclosed area, a space for a little one to crawl into and feel immersed in the huge green forest. Some of the leaves are sharp - a potential risk. It suggests danger which mirrors the inclusion of the wolf piece. The art objects I have selected lie on this knife edge between threat and play - like many childrens stories. The juxtaposition of the works help define and categorize them as art objects and what they appear to represent. Afterall, what is the difference between a dog and a wolf and a soft toy? Surely, we begin to make sens of the world through these types of comparisons. 3D pieces have been hung on the wall, as if they were 2D away from reach. Not all sculptures have to sit of the floor. Some things you can touch - some you can't, you have learn to look at them. The carpets feel soft don't they? The chairs are a cruising height all the better for negotiating a route around the room, no shape edges of tables to bump into here. Only space to imagine......Could the birds fly off the wall and circle around the sky above you? Will the dog bark at them if they do? Will they escape to the world of the Zebra's? What events could unfold in this room with a little mind's eye to focus on it? It's really important for children to experience Art for themselves and in their homes. If this room were selected, I's spend the £500 buying a piece of work for my daughter to enjoy and hopefully cherish for a longtime to come. I'd like to be able to teach my daughter how to read objects, signs and art forms to enrich her understanding of the world.
